Zubin Mehta is to relinquish his role as Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, effective October 2019. Mehta, who turned 80 in April this year, first conducted the IPO in the early-1960s, becoming Music Advisor in 1969, then Music Director in 1977, and shortly after the appointment became “for Life”.
Since 1985 Mehta has also been Chief Conductor of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, which he vacates next year, he is Honorary Conductor of the Munich Philharmonic and the Main Conductor (appointed by Lorin Maazel) of Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (Valencia).
Over his long career, his debut being in Vienna (where he studied) in 1958, Mehta has been Music Director of the Montreal Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic (the latter post concurrent with Israel). From 1998 until 2006 he was Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera. Zubin Mehta regularly conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Vienna Philharmonic.
