DON CARLO (Giuseppe Verdi)

It is with deep regret that French baritone Ludovic Tézier has had to withdraw from singing the role of Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa in Don Carlo for personal reasons. The role will be now be sung by German baritone Christoph Pohl on 12, 15, 26 and 29 May, and Italian baritone Simone Piazzola on 19 and 22 May.
Christoph Pohl made his Royal Opera debut in 2015 as Johannes (the world premiere of Georg Friedrich Haas’s Morgen und Abend). He has previously sung the role of Rodrigo in Dresden, where he is a member of the ensemble at the Semperoper. His recent roles include Wolfram (Tannhäuser) for La Fenice, Venice, Sir John Falstaff (Falstaff) for Theater an der Wien and the title role in Don Giovanni for Semperoper Dresden.
Simone Piazzola has previously sung the role of Rodrigo for La Scala, Milan. His recent roles include Giorgio Germont (La traviata) in Berlin, Los Angeles and Verona, Count di Luna (Il trovatore) in Amsterdam and Verona, Enrico Ashton (Lucia di Lammermoor) for Deutsche Oper Berlin and Renato (Un ballo in maschera) for Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.
Due to illness, Bulgarian soprano Krassimira Stoyanova has withdrawn from singing the role of Elizabeth of Valois in Don Carlo. The role of Elizabeth of Valois will now be sung in all performances by American soprano Kristin Lewis, making her Royal Opera debut.
Kristin Lewis has recently sung the roles of Amelia (Un ballo in maschera) and Aida for Vienna State Opera, Leonora (Il trovatore) and Mimì (La boheme) for La Fenice, Venice, and Bess (Porgy and Bess) for La Scala, Milan.
The rest of the Don Carlo cast remains unchanged, with cast members including American tenor Bryan Hymel as Don Carlo, American soprano Kristin Lewis as Elizabeth of Valois, Russian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk as Princess Eboli, Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov as Philip II, Georgian bass Paata Burchuladze as Grand Inquisitor and Italian bass Andrea Mastroni as Carlos V. French conductor Bertrand de Billy conducts all performances.
