Garsington Opera is delighted to announce that BBC Radio 3’s ‘Opera on 3’ will broadcast its production of Handel’s Semele on Saturday 1 July at 6.30pm. This marks the first radio broadcast from Garsington Opera.
Heidi Stober, making her UK debut, sings the title role with Robert Murray as Jupiter and Christine Rice as Juno. They are joined by Jurgita Adamonytė (Ino), David Soar (Cadmus & Somnus), countertenor Christopher Ainslie (Athamas) and Leonard Ingrams Foundation Award winner Llio Evans (Iris). Leading baroque specialist Jonathan Cohen conducts the Garsington Opera Orchestra and Chorus. Annilese Miskimmon, Artistic Director of Norwegian National Opera has directed the production. The production opened on 1 June 2017 and has been playing to packed houses as part of the 2017 season.
Composed in 1744 Semele features some of Handel’s most exquisitely beautiful music, with soaring choruses and splendid orchestral writing enhancing this most touching and humorous work.
As part of Garsington Opera for All programme, funded by Arts Council England, Semele will be screened free of charge round the country, particularly in rural coastal communities. In each location a large-scale programme of education and outreach work is firmly integrated with the free public screenings and will provide ground-breaking opportunities for communities to be involved in creating, learning about, and performing opera. Dates are Skegness (1 July), Ramsgate (22 July), Bridgwater (29 July) and Grimsby (15 October).
