BBC Ten Pieces Presents … Sir Henry Wood’s Magnificent Musical Inspirations!
Prom 11 & Prom 12; 2pm & 6pm
Sunday 23 July
Actor Rory Kinnear – best known for his roles in the James Bond films Quantum of Solace and Skyfall and The Imitation Game – will bring to life the character of BBC Proms founder-conductor, Sir Henry Wood, in two family-friendly Ten Pieces Proms at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 23 July. The cast, which also includes actors Ellis George and Ivanno Jeremiah as well as rising star Louis Walywn, will lead the audience through an action-packed programme exploring how nature, history, dream, love and magic have inspired composers across the centuries to create musical masterpieces.
Rory Kinnear says: “I am delighted to be coming to the Proms for the third time, to take on the role of the legendary conductor-founder Sir Henry Wood in this year’s Ten Pieces Proms. The two performances promise a whirlwind through time and space navigating key musical masterpieces, old and new.”
The cast join the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Jessica Cottis, who perform a selection of traditional and contemporary classical music - from Mozart’s The Magic Flute to Kerry Andrew’s No Place Like, an a cappella vocal piece specially created to be performed by young people from across the UK.
Aimed at inspiring a generation of children to get creative with classical music, the BBC’s Ten Pieces initiative invites children aged 7 - 14 to develop their own creative responses to ten pieces of music. The initiative has so far reached over four million people across the UK and won a BAFTA for the Ten Pieces II film. The Ten Pieces Presents … Prom this summer marks the fifth outing for the initiative to the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms, before Ten Pieces III is launched in schools in September 2017.
