On Wednesday January 17, the Paul & Henri Carnal Hall at the Rosey in Rolle, near Lausanne and Geneva, witnessed a memorable encounter between singer Cecilia Bartoli and violinist and conductor Maxim Vengerov, backed by the soloists of the International Menuhin Music Academy of which Vengerov is Artistic Director. The fundraising gala concert was also a world first, since Bartoli and Vengerov – despite a warm friendship spanning two decades – had astonishingly never previously performed together. The mezzo-soprano expressed her joy in working with the young musicians under Vengerov’s baton during the three days leading to the concert, sharing her time, talent and enthusiasm – while insisting that she in turn learned a great deal from their dedication and impressively in-depth approach to their art.
