The VII International Jorma Panula Conducting Competition will be held at the Vaasa City Hall from November 13 to November 16 in 2018. One of the most prestigious conducting competitions in Europe is organized for the seventh time. The audience can follow up close the gifted conductors at work during the four days long competition.
This time the competition received 145 accepted applications of which 20 competitors were chosen from 11 different European countries with four reserve competitors. In total, the applicants represented 23 different European countries. The largest number of applications came from Spain (20), Finland (18), Italy (16), Germany (15), France (14) and United Kingdom (14). The video jury in the qualifying round consisted of Jorma Panula, Petri Sakari, Jukka Iisakkila and Jari Sinkkonen. Prizes are awarded in the competition of which the first prize is 11 000 euros, the second prize is 8 000 euros and the third prize is 6 000 euros.
The event is organised by the Viljo and Maire Vuorio Foundation in collaboration with the City of Vaasa. The triennial competition’s Artistic Director and Chairman has been from the beginning Academician Jorma Panula. The current competition’s jury consists of conductors Ralf Gothóni (Finland), Eva Ollikainen (Suomi), Ole Kristian Ruud (Norja) and Josep Caballé Domenech (Espanja). Moreover, one musician representative from each of the competition orchestras, Vaasa City Orchestra and Jyväskylä Sinfonia are included in the jury.
The audience is welcome to follow the competition at all its stages. The audience has free entrance to the first preliminary round on Tuesday 13 November and the Semi-finals on Thursday 15 November. On Wednesday 14 November the program includes a premiere of a commission work by Kimmo Hakola and Cello Concerto No. 1 by Camille Saint-Saëns with the winner of the Turku XIII Cello Competition, Leonardo Chiodo. The four-day competition will culminate at the Vaasa City Hall in the Finals concert conducted by three finalists.
