Stunning performances by stellar violinist, Nathan Milstein with the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of New York under Bruno Walter

Celebrates HMV Vinyl Week 8-17 June 2018

Testament to the enduring power of classical music, always at the forefront of pioneering technology

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the release of the first ever vinyl album and timed to coincide with both HMV Vinyl Week (8-17 June 2018) and Father’s Day on 17th June 2018, Sony Classical has joined forces with HMV to recreate this ground-breaking debut LP.

In order to ensure an accurate representation of this first ever 12”, 33 1/3 rpm vinyl LP recording, they went right back to the source and used the original album master and its iconic artwork. The album features stunning performances by stellar violinist, of the day Nathan Milstein together with the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of New York, conducted by Maestro Bruno Walter.

Many serious political and social factors intervened in those early years in the 1930s when record company executives were trialling and not succeeding with alternatives to the 78 rpm format, not least the Great Depression 1929-1939 and World War Two 1939-1945. They also had to contend with significant technical problems such as audio fidelity, equipment design and – most importantly - the ability to shrink vinyl groove sizes and thus extend playback time.

In June 1948, however and following years of painstaking research Goddard Lieberson, President of Columbia Records, was finally ready to reveal to the world this exciting new LP format which is currently enjoying a massive global resurgence.

To document this historic event, hmv will be donating a copy of the exclusive pressing to the prestigious British Library Sound Archive on 15th of June 2018.

As a special treat for the first customers through the doors on Saturday 16th June, hmv will be giving away free vinyl copies of the special anniversary Mendelssohn album. A strictly limited run of just 500 LPs across the UK will be gifted for free to customers instore purchasing any of hmv’s exclusive range of vinyl albums, while stocks last.

Sarah Thwaites, Head of Sony Classical UK noted: "Classical music has always been at the forefront of new technology and presenting music in the highest possible quality. This magnificent recreation of the first ever vinyl LP with artists of the calibre of Milstein and Walter celebrates the timelessness of classical music. We are delighted to partner here with HMV for this important 70th anniversary to make the album available again in all its former glory”.

Commented John Hirst, hmv Music Manager: "We at hmv are thrilled to partner with Sony Music to celebrate 70 years of the vinyl record. We've been selling the format for just as long, possibly even selling the Mendelssohn release back in 1948 at our flagship store at 363 Oxford Street, and have been at the forefront of the vinyl revival in recent years. Here's to the next 70 years of the vinyl record!"
