The American composer, pianist (his repertoire included Concertos by Beethoven, Brahms and Rachmaninov), academic and Pulitzer Prize-winner George Walker has died aged 96. Of his numerous compositions, Lyric for Strings (which started life in 1946), and Lilacs (1996, soprano and orchestra, setting Walt Whitman), have proved particularly popular.

George Theophilus Walker was born in Washington DC on 27 June 1922 and he died in Montclair, New Jersey on 23 June 2018.
