The great Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé has died aged 85. Born on 12 April 1933 as Maria de Montserrat Viviana Concepción Caballé, she was famed for her performances of Verdi and the bel canto repertoire. In a career spanning fifty years she sang for the greatest opera houses and conductors, and came to be known to a wider audience with her 'Barcelona' duet with Freddie Mercury. She died today, 6 October 2018, and a funeral in Barcelona is being planned for this Monday. A fuller appreciation will follow.
