Sony Classical is thrilled to announce [on October 19] that keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman, famous for his hugely successful rock career across the years, has achieved a coveted Top Ten position in the UK Official Artist Album Chart with his debut album for Sony Classical: ‘Piano Odyssey’, making this his sixth Top Ten solo album and taking him to over 100 weeks in the Top Forty in Official Chart history.
With all tracks personally chosen, crafted, orchestrated and arranged by Wakeman himself, ‘Piano Odyssey’ enters the chart at number 7, following in the footsteps of Wakeman’s seminal album, ‘The Six Wives of Henry VIII’, which peaked at number 7 in the charts 45 years ago and became a best-selling album.
‘Piano Odyssey’ follows Wakeman on a very special journey across the whole span of his glittering career with arrangements of familiar and favourite works by such diversity as Queen, Yes, Liszt, Handel and David Bowie as well as repertoire from ‘The Six Wives of Henry VIII’ and new solo compositions. On ‘Piano Odyssey’, this amazing rock star, who has worked alongside some of music’s greatest artists, including David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Keith Emerson and Queen, presents familiar rock classics and classical themes in fresh, new and intriguing ways – with some support from superstar guitarist, Brian May, on one in particular!
Rick Wakeman commented: “All of the music chosen for ‘Piano Odyssey’ contains the most beautiful melodies and this is the key to being able to present fresh arrangements which can only enhance the reputation of the original. It was pure joy to make this album and I am delighted with the news today that I’m back in the charts!”.
Marking the start of a successful relationship with Rick Wakeman on Sony Classical, UK label Head, Sarah Thwaites, noted: “Rick Wakeman is a music industry icon and deserves to be up there. He is an inspiration to today’s new stars on how to have a successful career over 50 years, how to adapt to the ever-changing industry and how to remain as relevant in 2018 as in the 1970s”.
Rick Wakeman is currently on tour throughout the UK with music from ‘Piano Odyssey’.
