The 55th Jazzfest Berlin opens on 1 November with Nadin Deventer as its new artistic director. Almost all of the 35 concerts in the four festival days are already sold out. Remaining tickets will be available for purchase at the ticket office of the respective venue on the day of the event.
The Berliner Festspiele open the Jazzfest Berlin 2018 (1 to 4 November) with the “Haus of Jazz”. A total of ten acts on five stages and a whole handful of Germany premieres will be presented on all levels of the Festspielhaus. Among them are Nicole Mitchell and the Black Earth Ensemble, artist-in-residence Mary Halvorson with her Thumbscrew formation, Berlin-based KIM Collective and Rob Mazurek’s “Exploding Star International: Chicago-Berlin”.
Thomas Oberender (director of Berliner Festspiele): “Nadin Deventer’s festival dramaturgy – with the opening event featuring concerts on all of the Festspielhaus stages – shows that she is taking the festival in a new direction as artistic director. The gesture of opening and motion continues, the festival is evolving into a social spot for encounters, the topics taken on in music and beyond enable friction. The Jazzfest Berlin 2018 is looking for the traces of history in the here and the now.”
The following topics permeate the festival programme: Europe’s multifaceted music scene, music from Chicago as a center of empowerment for black music and a highly creative place and, following on this the third topic, African American music, that is examined from a historical perspective through to contemporary Afrofuturism. Each of the four festival days has its own character that, following the “Grand Opening” on Thursday, are overwritten with “Friday Blast”, “Hyperactive Saturday” and “Melancholic Sunday”.
On the four festival days approximately 200 musicians from 15 countries will perform in a whole variety of formations. The programme presents 35 concerts and 12 further events in the accompanying programme. There are eight premieres of productions, eleven further bands celebrate their Germany premiere, artists from Berlin participate in twelve festival projects and female musicians play a leading role in a total of 14 formations.
The main venue for the 2018 Jazzfest Berlin is the Haus der Berliner Festspiele with its various stages, the A-Trane, the Quasimodo, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and the Prince Charles in Kreuzberg.
