One of the most-familiar faces on BBC Television as a newsreader (1954-82), Richard Baker had a passion for classical music that extended to his writing books about Mozart and Schubert, being a regular panellist on Face the Music (BBC2, hosted by pianist Joseph Cooper), introducing (in welcoming and civilised tones) TV relays of BBC Proms, and narrating such pieces as Peter and the Wolf and The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.

Richard Douglas James Baker OBE RD (Decoration for Officers of the Royal Naval Reserve) was born in London on 15 June 1925 and he died yesterday, 17 November 2018, following a life lived with distinction. Richard Baker was married to Margaret from 1961 until his death, and he leaves two children.
