VIENNA PHILHARMONIC AND SONY CLASSICAL EXTEND THEIR LONG-TERM COLLABORATION
New York / Berlin, 28 December 2018
The Vienna Philharmonic and Sony Classical have agreed to extend their long-term collaboration. It will continue to focus on the New Year's Concert, the world's biggest classical music event, which is held every January 1st in the Golden Hall in Vienna’s Musikverein and televised in over 90 countries. Future concerts will be released globally through Sony Classical on CD, Download, DVD, Blu-ray, Vinyl and of course across all streaming platforms.
The Vienna Philharmonic’s Summer Night Concerts, set against the unique backdrop of Schönbrunn Palace, will also be available exclusively on Sony Classical over the coming years. Additional new recordings on Sony Classical with the world-renowned symphony orchestra are also planned from 2019.
The 2018 New Year's Concert once again took the top spot in the Austrian pop charts. In Switzerland, it reached its highest entry ever at number 5, following Spain and France which had also seen record results in recent years. For the first time however, the recording reached Number 1 in Germany’s annual classical charts, making the New Year's Concert 2018 under Riccardo Muti the year’s best-selling recording in the world's largest classical music market. It also marked the highest of a total of 8 entries achieved by Sony Classical in this year’s Top 20 across the entire year, ensuring that the label once again dominated the German classical charts ahead of Deutsche Grammophon and Decca.
