2019 is packed with celebratory LMP concerts including the opening gala at the refurbished Fairfield Halls in Croydon
Monday 11th February marks the 70th birthday of the UK’s longest-established chamber orchestra, the London Mozart Players. To celebrate, the orchestra will be performing Mozart’s magnificent Symphony No. 41 in C, K.551 (Jupiter) in front of an invited audience in Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London on the 34th floor of the UK’s tallest building.
The day will begin with business as usual, a rehearsal in Chiswick with violinist Tasmin Little for a forthcoming concert at the Ealing Music and Film Festival, then the players will hot-foot it across town to Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London on London’s Southbank for their 3.30pm concert. 34th floors up in this stunning luxury hotel, the 30-strong orchestra (with a head for heights) will perform in front of floor-to-ceiling windows with London laid out behind it. It’s the ultimate setting for a livestream to the world via Classic FM’s Facebook page, which will make this ‘private’ concert accessible to the widest possible audience.
Alex Willats, General Manager at Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London commented: ‘It is a pleasure to host one of London’s premier musical institutions on their very special day. The incredible views from Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London are the perfect backdrop for this unique concert and we hope the audience around the world enjoys the spectacular sounds of this truly talented orchestra.’
In a continuation of the birthday theme, two days after the 70th birthday on Wednesday 13th February at St John’s Smith Square at 1.05pm, comes the LMP’s ‘Piano Explored’ concert. Howard Shelley and the LMP will perform the piano concerto that featured in the LMP’s first ever concert in 1949 – Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 in G, K.453. Howard is one of many LMP associates who have sent videoed birthday greetings to the orchestra and these will be released on the LMP Facebook page throughout the day. Former Artistic Director Jane Glover has also sent a message of birthday greeting and the orchestra will be reunited with Jane for a concert at St John’s Smith Square on 11 April – ‘Mozart’s Women’: a programme inspired by the many women who influenced Mozart during his short life.
In a busy year of concerts, education projects and outreach initiatives, the LMP is also looking forward to returning to its residency at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls. The orchestra will open the concert hall with a gala concert on 18th September in the presence of their patron HRH The Earl of Wessex.
Julia Desbruslais, Executive Director of the LMP said: ‘It will be a real thrill to feel on top of the world, performing in this amazing building as we celebrate our 70th birthday, playing one of the greatest symphonies by Mozart for our guests and for the Classic FM viewers on Facebook. We are hugely grateful to the Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard for hosting this very special celebration and to Classic FM for making it possible for anyone online around the world to celebrate with us!’.
