Clara Schumann is Leipzig’s most famous female musician, and 2019 is the 200th anniversary of her birth. The CLARA19 project will celebrate her legacy.
Guests will have the chance to walk in Clara’s footsteps at original locations, including the Schumann House where she once lived. Her compositions will be performed at music venues across the city. The festival seeks to consider her life from a modern perspective, a woman who shaped the 19th century like almost none other.
CLARA19 Events in Leipzig
CLARA 19 will open on 26 January 2019 with a ceremony at the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy”. The highlight of the year will be the Schumann Festival Weeks from 12 to 29 September 2019, which coincide with the musician’s birthday (13 September 1819) and wedding day (12 September 1840).
The Schumann House on Inselstraße, where Clara and Robert Schumann spent their first four years of marriage, then presents itself with a new museum concept. In the “Great Concert”, the pianist Lauma Skride and the Gewandhaus orchestra – conducted by music director Andris Nelsons – will perform Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto Op. 7. Furthermore, “Clara in the Park” and “Clara in the City”, organised by the Leipzig Music Trail, will ensure artistic highlights and a lively festival atmosphere.
