UK-based Chinese pianist, Di Xiao is pleased to announce the launch of her brand-new CD ‘Femmes de Légende’ - Women Composers and Muses. The recording is released on Ecstasy Records and coincides with Ms Xiao’s ‘Femmes de Légende’ concert on 12th March 2019 at 7.30pm at Birmingham Town Hall and subsequent tours of the UK and China, including the prestigious Guangzhou Opera House, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.

The idea for the recording/concert project stems from Di Xiao’s desire to highlight these works that she describes as “beautifully crafted, intelligent and diverse” that are less well known on disc and in concert halls, written by great composers who happen to be women and thereby give them a much-deserved wider platform.

Her chosen repertoire for the new album features:-

Cécile Chaminade: Thème varié, Op.89

Clara Schumann: Variation on a theme by Robert Schumann, Op.20

Mélanie Hélène Bonis: Femmes de Légende: Mélisande, Desdémona, Salomé

Maria Szymanowska: Nocturne in B flat major

Cecilia McDowall: Four piano solos (1998-1999): Shades of Solace, Vespers in Venice, Pavane, Tapsalteerie

Eleanor Alberga: Jamaican Medley

Of ‘Femmes de Légende’, Ms Xiao notes: “The project has been a treasure hunt full of surprise and delight in equal measure. I was often reduced to tears as I learned more about the extreme challenges women had to confront just in order in order for their compositional voices to be heard. We can all learn from their courage and fortitude”.

Over the years, Ms Xiao has built a formidable reputation as an international ambassador for the piano and for bridging the gap between eastern and western cultures. A teacher at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Ms Xiao has been playing the piano since the age of 4, wining many awards and much praise along the way for the quality of her musicianship and for her innovative programming. Di Xiao collaborates widely and her repertoire reflects a broad spectrum of musical styles from Chinese folk music, through western classical to contemporary piano works. A profound understanding of her art and a deep belief in the universal language of music give a special quality and integrity to her work. Consequently, Di Xiao is able to build a strong bond with audiences all over the world.
