Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ryan Wigglesworth is replacing Antonello Manacorda to conduct the Glyndebourne Festival 2019 production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. Glyndebourne looks forward to welcoming Antonello Manacorda to the Festival again in the future.
Ryan Wigglesworth has established himself as one of the foremost composer-conductors of his generation. From 2015-2018 he was Principal Guest Conductor of the Hallé Orchestra and from 2015 to 2017 Composer in Residence at English National Opera. Further residencies have included the Cleveland Orchestra (2013-2015) and the 2018 Grafenegg Festival in Austria. He regularly works with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, as well as continuing his strong relationships in the UK with the BBC Symphony, Hallé and CBSO. In 2019 he founded the Knussen Chamber Orchestra which debuts at this year’s Aldeburgh Festival.
Recent opera engagements include Birtwistle’s The Minotaur for the Royal Opera House, Così fan tutte, Carmen and Glanert’s Caligula for ENO, Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Aldeburgh, and a widely acclaimed semi-staged performance of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s The Silver Tassie with the BBCSO at the Barbican.
One of the leading composers of his day, his first opera, The Winter’s Tale, premiered at ENO in February 2017.
The Glyndebourne Festival 2019 production of Die Zauberflöte runs from 18 July - 24 August 2019. The performance on 22 August will be conducted by Kerem Hasan.
Die Zauberflöte is broadcast live in cinemas and online on Sunday 4 August 2019.
