Following on from the success of John Nelson’s acclaimed recording of Berlioz’s Les Troyens, the American conductor returns to Strasbourg with the same stellar cast for two performances of La Damnation de Faust this week (25th and 26th April). The performances are being recorded by Erato / Warner Classics for release in the Autumn, and follow a celebrated performance of Berlioz’s Requiem at St Paul’s Cathedral in London last month.

Nelson once again conducts the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and a star-studded vocal cast, including Joyce DiDonato (mezzo-soprano) and Michael Spyres (tenor), returning to the Palais de la musique et des congrès for the next instalment in this momentous series, honouring the work of Hector Berlioz on the 150th anniversary of his death.

“It is wonderful to be back in Strasbourg with our stellar Troyens team: John Nelson, Joyce DiDonato, Michael Spyres and Nicolas Courjal, to record another Berlioz masterpiece: la Damnation de Faust” says Alain Lanceron, President of Warner Classics & Erato, “With the Requiem recorded in March at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, and our box-set devoted to Berlioz's complete works, our contribution to mark the composer’s anniversary year is complete. The magic baton of maestro Nelson leads this incredible group of singers and musicians to new artistic heights. We can’t wait for the release in the Autumn.”

John Nelson’s recording of Les Troyens has received critical acclaim all over the world, winning numerous accolades including Gramophone’s Recording of the Year, BBC Music Magazine’s Opera Award, Germany’s Opus Klassik Award and more recently, the coveted Record of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique Classique.

La Damnation de Faust will be released in November 2019.
