Over 10.000 enthusiastic visitors celebrated the 150th birthday of the Vienna Opera House at the an Open Air Anniversary Concert yesterday, Sunday, 26 May 2019. Together with singers from the ensemble, international guest soloists, the Orchestra and Chorus of the Wiener Staatsoper performed under the baton of Marco Armiliato on Herbert-von-Karajan Square/Opernring with free access. As a surprise for the audience, a few arias were sung from the terrace of the Vienna State Opera and from balconies of the Bristol Hotel. Opera stars KS Nina Stemme, KS Tomasz Konieczny, Jongmin Park, Olga Bezsmertna, Erwin Schrott, Valentina Nafornita, Benjamin Bernheim, Camilla Nylund, KS Ferruccio Furlanetto, KS Roberto Alagna, Aleksandra Kurzak, Stephanie Houtzeel, Chen Reiss, Günther Groissböck and Sonya Yoncheva presented a programme from across the history of opera with works by Wagner, Beethoven, Verdi, Mozart, Massenet, Korngold, Dvořák, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Gounod, Halévy and Puccini; the evening was moderated by Barbara Rett.
The Open Air Anniversary Concert was broadcast on large screens in all Austrian federal state capitals as well as live on ORF III, ARTE and via the Wiener Staatsoper’s live streaming service to a worldwide audience.
