Antoine Tamestit and Masato Suzuki have announced a new recording on the Harmonia Mundi label, due for release on 23 August 2019.

The disc features JS Bach’s three sonatas for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord, and comes following Tamestit and Suzuki’s acclaimed performances of this programme in Germany and the UK last year.

To coincide with this new release, Suzuki and Tamestit will tour this programme throughout Europe, with upcoming performances including Verbier Festival, Schleswig Holstein Musikfestival, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Haus der Musik Innsbruck, Alte Oper Frankfurt and LSO St Luke’s London.

Antoine Tamestit comments: “This Bach recording is so special to me as it comes out of a long friendship with Masato Suzuki, whom I have always deeply admired as much for his innate and deep knowledge of Bach and baroque music as for his modernity and imagination. We have been friends for 10 years and this recording is the result of all our discussions on music, style, expression, energy and meaning.

“I feel particularly happy to be able to present the masterpieces that are Bach's Viola Da Gamba Sonatas, which are often forgotten or overlooked despite having the same genius as the most beautiful Cantata arias, the energy of the Brandenburg Concertos and the incredible counterpoints of the Art of Fugue. With my beautiful Stradivari Viola of 1672 and the amazing Kroesbergen harpsichord, it was my dream to release such a recording.”

Masato Suzuki adds: “I am delighted that our long musical and personal friendship has resulted in a disc of some of JS Bach’s most outstanding music. These three sonatas require the players to possess a deep interest in and passion for the composer’s polyphony, and Antoine is a wonderful partner in all these points.

“The sessions were held in the historic Teldex Studio in Berlin, and the whole recording process was very musical and fruitful thanks to our producer, Martin Sauer. I am very proud of the final result of the recording. We hope that this music stays with you and serves you as enrichment in your life, as the text of the aria says "Es fühlet mein Herze die tröstliche Stunde. My heart feels the hour of consolation.”
