As announced today by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Mariss Jansons is taking a three-month regenerative break on the advice of his doctors, preventing him from conducting concerts with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in June, July and August 2019.
Susanna Mälkki, music director of the Helsinki Philharmonic and principal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, will replace Mariss Jansons for the concerts with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra during the opening weekend of the Riga Jurmala Music Festival on 19 and 21 July 2019. The scheduled programme of works and soloists – violinist Julian Rachlin and pianist Rudolf Buchbinder – remain unchanged.
“On behalf of the festival’s team and all Latvian classical music lovers, we wish a speedy and full recovery to Mariss Jansons. We look forward to welcoming him back as soon as possible to the Riga Jurmala Music Festival,” says Zane Culkstena, Managing Director of the festival. “We are at the same time very thankful to Susanna Mälkki for agreeing to step in at the last minute. Her versatility and broad repertoire have taken her to symphony and chamber orchestras, contemporary music ensembles and opera houses around the world. We are very excited to be able to count her among the artists performing in the inaugural edition of the Riga Jurmala Music Festival.”
With concerts in historic cities of Riga and Jurmala, the Riga Jurmala Music Festival is comprised of four powerful weekends, July 19-21, August 16-18, August 23-25 and August 30-September 1, each anchored by a leading international orchestra and conductor. The festival will present an array of the world’s leading conductors, orchestras and soloists, both instrumental and vocal. At the same time, it will provide a major platform for young talent from the Baltic region and beyond, all in a celebratory atmosphere of cultural exchange.
