Virtuoso American trumpeter, Paul Merkelo, currently celebrating his 25th season as solo trumpet with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, is delighted to announce his forthcoming solo projects in the UK, to include:-

~ September release of his debut CD ‘The Enlightened Trumpet’ on Sony Classical of trumpet concertos by Haydn – Concerto in E flat major for Trumpet & Orchestra; Hummel – Concerto in E major for Trumpet & Orchestra; Telemann – Concerto in D major for Trumpet & Strings and L. Mozart – Concerto in D major for Trumpet, 2 Horns and Strings with the Oxford Philharmonic under Marios Papadopoulos

~ 14th November concert of ‘The Enlightened Trumpet’ at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford with the Oxford Philharmonic under Marios Papadopoulos - conductor and Hannah Schneider - conductor (Haydn), 7.30pm. Repertoire: Haydn - Symphony No. 92 in G major, Hob. I:92, ‘Oxford’; Trumpet Concerto in E flat major, Hob. VIIe:1 // L. Mozart - Trumpet Concerto in D major // Mozart - Symphony No. 39 in E flat major, K. 543

~ London solo debut on 7th April 2020 at Cadogan Hall with the English Chamber Orchestra under Adrien Perruchon to include: Thomas Ades - Three Studies from Couperin; Telemann - Trumpet Concerto in D major; Stravinsky - Pulcinella Suite; Haydn - Trumpet Concerto in E flat and Vivaldi - Concerto for Two Trumpets.

~ Additionally, Paul Merkelo plans a further release on SONY Classical in Autumn 2020, featuring trumpet concertos by Weinberg, Arutiunian and a new arrangement of the Shostakovich Concerto No 1 for Trumpet, Piano and String Orchestra, Op. 35 with the Russian National Orchestra under the baton of Hans Graf.

Merkelo made his New York debut in 1998 at the Lincoln Center with the New World Symphony Orchestra and Michael Tilson Thomas. He has worked with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Charles Dutoit, Lorin Maazel, Sir Georg Solti, Zubin Mehta and Valery Gergiev and has been invited as guest principal trumpet in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. As a soloist, Paul Merkelo has been featured with orchestras worldwide, including the English Chamber Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, Venice Baroque Orchestra and Eastman Wind Ensemble. He is the founder of the Paul Merkelo Scholarship which awards financial aid to promising young Canadian brass students.
