Ferrando and Gugliemo wager with cynical Don Alfonso on the constancy of their lovers Dorabella and Fiordiligi. For one day all Alfonso’s demands must be followed. Claiming military conscription the men depart for war, leaving the women distraught. Heavily disguised they reappear and, unwittingly aided by the maid Despina, attempt to woo the women. Dorabella soon cannot resist Gugliemo, but Fiordiligi remains steadfast despite being attracted to the disguised Ferrando. She finally succumbs. At a mock wedding, a military march proclaims the soldiers' 'return'. Terrified, the women admit infidelity, but are shocked at their lover’s deception. Will their relationships survive?
