Solti leads powerhouse performances – a truly turbulent account of “The Flying Dutchman” overture – interlaced with logic, rigorous preparation and no small measure of sensitivity – this chamber performance of Siegfried Idyll is a minor miracle, perfect in intimacy and expressive shape. Throughout, the VPO responds magnificently to Solti’s electric direction. Decca’s sound is a beauty and the packaging is fully worthy.
